Our Story

What's in a name?

Peak Hydrogeologic, PLLC was conceived out of necessity to provide clients with high quality consulting solutions that effectively balance economic prosperity with environmental protection, without compromising client value.

After 10 years working for other consulting firms, company founder, Jonathan Gerst, recognized an ethical conundrum that affected how his colleagues  performed their jobs.  That is, many consulting scientists and engineers fresh out of school held to a passion to make the world a better place through environmental consulting.  However, after time and upon succumbing to the false notion that the bottom line is the highest priority; these peers began to loose touch with their humble beginnings, ultimately becoming jaded about how to best serve their clients.

While there is a strong desire for all environmental consultants  to help their clients pollute to the fullest extent of the law and at the lowest cost possible;  Peak Hydrogeologic, PLLC maintains a resolute disposition about value optimization by serving as an ethical environmental consultant that puts protection first!

Meet the founder

Raised in Upstate SC, Jonathan developed a strong appreciation for the natural beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains as  gleaned from scouts,  rock hounding, climbing, mountain biking, and kayaking. While receiving a BA in Geology and studying abroad in Germany with Appalachian State University, Jonathan developed a passion for hydrogeology, sustainable development, and problem solving.

After starting his environmental consulting career with a large firm in Roanoke, VA, Jonathan attended grad school for a MS in hydrogeology at Virginia Tech.  Upon graduation, Jonathan and his wife served as Peace Corps Volunteers in Morocco.  Later the couple moved to Portland, OR where Jonathan worked as a hydrogeologist for another large consulting firm.  After the birth of their first son, Jonathan moved his family back to the Carolinas to work as a branch manager for an environmental consultant in Spartanburg & Greenville.

Jonathan started Peak Hydrogeologic in 2016 in Tryon, NC to provide the high quality of service he had observed at larger consulting firms with the efficiency and flexibility possible through a smaller operation.

In addition to dedicating his working career to the study of rocks and water, Jonathan is in regular pursuit of new rock climbing and kayaking adventures.  Jonathan and his wife recently celebrated the birth of their second son. Beyond work and familial obligations, Jonathan and his wife actively support their community in Tryon, NC as a Tryon Planning Board Member, Tuesday School Co-Chair, and Tryon Beerfest Volunteer Coordinator.
